Looking Ahead to Journal Questions 7 to 13

Home Nugget #29
Assigned on Friday December 9, 2011
Due on Monday December 12, 2011

Given that we were unable to grade the first set of journal questions (# 1 - 6) on Friday, we will do so on Monday. In addition, you should begin answering questions # 7 - 13 which will be graded this coming Friday (December 16).

Today also marked our 9th math olympiad which signals that you will soon have a summative assessment on Olympiads 1 - 10 as is our custom. Since 're-inventing' olympiads is no longer being formally assigned, you may want to take matters into your own hands and work through this process on your own.

Home Nugget #26

Journal instructions were handed out on Monday October 16.

A sample response was shared and discussed in great detail on Tuesday October 17.

Students agreed that putting together a thorough and worthwhile product required them to break the assignment into pieces and to answer about two questions a night.

By tomorrow, at least half of the journal questions should be answered in their entirety such that five questions remain for Thurs to Sun.

(Students were taking the BPS Predictive Tests for ELA and Math on Wed. and Thurs. so we did not have a chance to have any formal math lessons/investigations during these two days)

Students Finally Get to Prove their Mastery of Chapter 11

Home Nugget #18
Assigned on Monday June 6, 2011
Due on Thursday June 9, 2011

For the next four days you will be immersed in practice and collaboration with chapter 11, in particular with lesson 11-9 on solving rational equations.

The problem sets will include problems from lesson 11 itself, the end of chapter test, a Form 2D practice test and the hybrid form 2A and 2B test from the prior weekend.

Your home nugget is to work on any problems you deem neccessary in order to fully master chapter 11. Furthermore, you will be tested on our four most recent calendar problems (including those on the concentric circles pizza slices and crossing the wasteland with limited supplies).

Finding a Way to Cope with Complex Fractions

Home Nugget #14
Assigned on Friday May 27, 2011
Due on Tuesday May 31, 2011

In Algebra I text,

Page 623 # 1 - 21 odd. Check your solutions to these problems and then make a decision about whether you need to read what is offered at the outset of the lesson on simplifying complex fractions.

Furthermore, although the Funny Face Function Project is due on Thursday June 2, you are expected to provide a near-final draft of your written work and the calculator with the face programmed in by Tuesday. Given that this project is worth a 100 point test grade, this early pseudo-due date allows us to troubleshoot well in advance of the actual date of completion.

For those of you absent on Friday, we spent considerable time working on home nugget problems from #12 and #13 as well as exploring a somewhat new notion of cross products as a means for adding rational expressions with unlike denominators. You can find the groundwork for our conversation on page 618 problem #54.

The specific problems we reviewed included:

Page 604 #28

Page 605 # 45, 52, 53

Page 613 # 39, 40

Page 618 # 44, 46, 48

Finally, students took a self-assessment to get a sense of how much of the content from chapter 11 we've mastered. This can be found on page 607 problems 3 - 5, 8, 9, 12 - 14, 19 - 21, 28 - 30

As is customarily done every marking period, students were provided with questions that they must respond to in journal format. This implies a number of things:
1. The questions are generally forcing students to reflect on concepts or content that was challenging or integral to our overall course of study.
2. The response require a combination of writing and mathematics such that the student makes a convincing argument for whatever it is they are trying to communicate.
3. The lesson constitutes 10% of the term grade because of its long-term nature and the amount of work required to complete it.

Alternative Assessment: Conducting the Error Analysis

Home Nugget #17
Assigned on Thursday February 3
Due on Friday February 4

Error analysis shows common mistakes that happen when performing an operation or executing an algorithm. For example, when students multiply like bases, they often mistakenly add the exponents and multiply the bases. Thus, students might think that 3^5 x 3^7 = 9^12.

Tonight you will write an error analysis for eight topics/themes/operations/algorithms found in chapter 7.

For each topic you must include:

A. Describe the topic you have chosen
B. Identify the error students are likely to make
C. Provide the right method/pathway/perspective for problem-solving and any advice you can offer for choosing this pathway in the future
