Finding a Way to Cope with Complex Fractions

Home Nugget #14
Assigned on Friday May 27, 2011
Due on Tuesday May 31, 2011

In Algebra I text,

Page 623 # 1 - 21 odd. Check your solutions to these problems and then make a decision about whether you need to read what is offered at the outset of the lesson on simplifying complex fractions.

Furthermore, although the Funny Face Function Project is due on Thursday June 2, you are expected to provide a near-final draft of your written work and the calculator with the face programmed in by Tuesday. Given that this project is worth a 100 point test grade, this early pseudo-due date allows us to troubleshoot well in advance of the actual date of completion.

For those of you absent on Friday, we spent considerable time working on home nugget problems from #12 and #13 as well as exploring a somewhat new notion of cross products as a means for adding rational expressions with unlike denominators. You can find the groundwork for our conversation on page 618 problem #54.

The specific problems we reviewed included:

Page 605 # 45, 52, 53

Page 613 # 39, 40

Page 618 # 44, 46, 48

Finally, students took a self-assessment to get a sense of how much of the content from chapter 11 we've mastered. This can be found on page 607 problems 3 - 5, 8, 9, 12 - 14, 19 - 21, 28 - 30
